Birthday Cakes in Leeds: Which Cake for Which Party?
Hello cake lovers of Leeds! The question I get asked more than any other (apart from "can I lick the bowl?") is "how much cake do I actually need?" So I thought I'd put together a little guide to help you pick the right birthday cake for the size of your party, whether it's just you and a fork or the whole family round.
Every cake is baked fresh to order at my bakery in Kirkstall, and I love nothing more than letting my imagination run away with me. But even the most gorgeous cake is a bit of a let-down if it runs out before everyone's had a slice, so here goes!
A treat for one (or two!)
If it's a little celebration, my bento cakes are perfect. They're a vanilla or chocolate sponge iced in vanilla buttercream in the colour of your choice, and a single serving (you could share, but I won't judge if you don't!) in a personal box with a fork. You can have a short message piped on, or go for my photo bento cake with a picture of your choice on top. They make a brilliant surprise for a friend, a colleague or a teacher.
Small family get-togethers (4 to 6 people)
For a birthday tea at home, my Mini Oreo Drip Cake serves 4 to 6. It's a 6 inch chocolate sponge with Oreo filling, vanilla icing, a chocolate drip and lots more Oreos. Chocolate overload in the best way!
And if you've completely forgotten (it happens to the best of us!), have a look at my Emergency Cakes. There's one for 4 to 6 people and a bigger one for 8 to 12, in double chocolate or a classic Victoria sponge with strawberry jam.
Parties of 12 to 20
This is where most birthdays land, and you've got lots of choice. My personalised heart cakes come in 6 or 8 inch, with one base colour, cream piping and a name, number or little phrase (three words max!). My personalised sheet cakes serve 12 to 18 depending how you cut them, look gorgeous on a dessert table and are available vegan too.
If you want something that really makes a statement, my celebration cakes are the ones. The Vintage Heart is two layers and 8 inches, feeding around 14 or more. The Funfetti Drips and Swirls cakes are four layers tall and feed around 20 or more.
The big ones (30 people and up)
Big birthday, big cake! My Lotus Biscoff Dreamy Cake is a stacked two-tier with Biscoff drips and Biscoff buttercream, and it feeds around 30 to 40 depending on how you cut it.
For a fully bespoke design, this is where the fun really starts. Rockets and astronauts, pirate ships, teddy bears' picnics: if you can dream it, I'll do my very best to bake it. Send me your ideas and any pictures for inspiration, and tell me roughly how many guests you're expecting so I can get the size right.
Not a cake person?
Some of my favourite birthday "cakes" aren't cakes at all! My brownie and blondie stack is a tower of brownies, blondies and lashings of sauce, and you can add a Happy Birthday topper. My cookie pie comes cut into 12 pieces and is stuffed with your favourite treats. Both are a brilliant alternative to a traditional cake.
Ordering and getting your cake home
Please give me at least 72 hours' notice, and more for bespoke designs. Cakes are collected from my bakery at Unit I, Cardigan Workspace, Lennox Road, Leeds LS4 2BL, Tuesday to Friday, or Saturday, Sunday or Monday by appointment. I can sometimes deliver locally too. Just ask and I'll confirm. Sorry, cakes can't go in the post!
For the safest journey home, pop your cake flat in the passenger footwell rather than on a seat.
